October is known internationally as Breast Cancer Month. It is a time when people across the world come together to recognise the impact of breast cancer on the community,Pink Ribbon Day.During October, as part of the National Breast Cancer Foundation’s 2005 Pink Ribbon Campaign, we held the third annual Pink Ribbon Breakfast for breast cancer research project. The Pink Ribbon Breakfast gives everyone the opportunity to be involved in or run an event of their own to raise funds for breast cancer research; no matter where you live or when you’re available.

The aims of the Pink Ribbon Breakfast project are to increase awareness of the importance of research and its role in breast health and to provide opportunities for communities to raise funds for vital breast cancer research while having a whole lot of fun! All you need to do was get together with some friends, family or colleagues during the month of October for breakfast.

The Pink Ribbon Breakfast project in 2005 grew much more than we expected – which is absolutely fabulous for breast cancer research. In 2004 we had 625 hosts but in 2005 over 2,600 volunteer breakfast hosts enlisted and invited 100,000 guests! We were delighted and totally amazed with the response from the Australian community.

We received so many lovely warm stories, fabulous photos, copies of invitations, samples of products that our hosts made and sold and goodie bags that were put together for breakfasts – it has been truly astonishing! There were breakfasts for 1st to 50th birthdays, bridal showers and wedding breakfasts. They were held in child care centres and clinics, on boats, beaches and in stores from hardware to pharmacy. The ingenuity and enthusiasm put into the breakfasts have moved all of the NBCF staff from tears to laughter.

So to all of our wonderful hosts – we say a HUGE thank you!

In Australia specifically, this symbol embodies the National Breast Cancer Foundations (NBCF) aim of funding research for prevention and cure. It signifies the progress Australia has made towards quality research that has resulted in increased survival rates and improved quality of life.
